Our BLfgT Sandwich Recipe
Bacon, Lettuce, and fried green Tomatoes with Cheese Sandwiches
The last time we went to the farm we grabbed a half bushel of hot banana peppers so that we could make our Simple Homemade Stuffed Hot Banana Peppers. We also bought a small basket green tomatoes to make this delicious Bacon, Lettuce, and fried green Tomatoes with Cheese Sandwiches recipe.
So here is what you will need for an awesome BLfgT with Cheese Sandwich:
- 3 or 4 green tomatoes. Look for ones that have started to turn pink. They have a sweeter flavor and, in our opinion, taste better in this BLfgT sandwich.
- 1 pound of bacon.
- 1 fresh head of lettuce.
- 1/2 pound of American Cheese (Land-o-Lakes is what we like best)
- 1 loaf of Italian bread.
- 2 cups of flour.
- 2/3 cup of Vegetable Oil
(in addition, save your bacon drippings for cooking the tomatoes) – about 1 1/2 cups if cooking in oil only
- Salt
The first step to making these delicious Bacon, Lettuce, and fried green Tomatoes with Cheese Sandwiches is to take the tomatoes and wash them. After washing your green tomatoes, slice them about 1/8th of an inch thick (they can be thicker if you prefer). After you have sliced all of the green tomatoes, take some Morton Salt and lightly sprinkle salt over all of the tomatoes. This step is optional, as it can be added after all of the tomatoes have cooked. If you are looking to reduce your salt intake, skip the salt altogether.
If you would like to save some time, you can start cooking the bacon ( we use a Cast-Iron Skillet)while you are cutting the tomatoes and you can even use the same pan for cooking the tomatoes (just make sure you remove any tiny burnt pieces). We also like to cook the tomatoes in the bacon grease, so save your grease! You can cook the bacon how ever you like it. I personally like it not very crunchy and Mom likes it crunchy.
Once you have cut all the green tomatoes into slices, take the flour and add it to a bowl or shallow dish. Then take your green tomatoes one at a time and drop them into the flour. Flip it over to cover the other side (don’t forget the bacon is cooking). Make sure both sides are well covered. After that is done, take the flour coated tomatoes and place them on a cutting board or a baking sheet till you are are ready to cook them.
After your bacon is done cooking, place the slices on a paper towel covered plate. Save the bacon grease when cooking the bacon – either keep it in the pan or put it into the pan you are planning on frying the green tomatoes in. At this point add the 2/3 cup of cooking oil to the bacon grease.
Warm the pan over medium heat. Once the oil in your pan is hot, begin to carefully add the green tomatoes one at a time till you have a full single layer. While you are doing this, if you would like, you can turn your oven on to warm (or its lowest temp) to keep the bacon warm until the green tomatoes are all done.
While cooking, use a fork or other utensil to turn over and check the color. When golden brown, turn the tomato over and cook the other side to the same color. If you like them crunchier, cook them slightly longer – just be sure not to burn! Once both sides are done, take them out and place on a paper towel covered plate to absorb some of the oil. You can stack the tomatoes on the paper towel once the oil is all soaked up. Continue doing this until all of the tomatoes are cooked.
We like ours a dark golden brown – extra crunchy & extra delicious!
When you are getting close to having all of the green tomatoes fried, if you like, you can toast your bread. However, the tomatoes provide just enough crunch for your sandwich that it tastes awesome either way. Once you have your bread ready, you can start to build your Bacon, Lettuce, and fried green Tomatoes with Cheese Sandwiches by placing a slice of the Land-o-Lakes American cheese and and handful of lettuce on the bread.
Once the green tomatoes are all done, continue building your Bacon, Lettuce, and fried green Tomatoes with Cheese Sandwiches. Add enough slices of fried green tomatoes to cover thesandwich and top with about 3-4 slices of bacon. Enjoy your BLfgT with Cheese Sandwich!

I love tomatoes but eat them uncooked or in sauce. Never though about frying them. Thanks for an interesting recipe.
This is my kind of sandwich! Although I rarely have bread, but I’m getting a great idea for a salad! Thanks for the inspiration!
